146 glitch symbols, from ░▒▓ shade blocks to ten symbols under stacked marks. None is broken: all are real Unicode characters, and the list below says what each is. Some apps strip or block these characters, and screen readers may read them badly.

Boxes that stand for something missing
The box drawn when no font has a character is nicknamed tofu. ▯ is that shape as a character of its own; ⍰ is a sign from the APL programming language. The 39 Control pictures are visible stand-ins for codes such as null and escape: ␀ copies as a picture, never as the code.
Blocks, static and stacked marks
Shade blocks come from the Block Elements block: Unicode notes ░ ▒ ▓ as 25%, 50% and 75% fills, and █ as solid. Broken lines are Box Drawing dashes and diagonals. Braille static is ⣿, the eight Braille Patterns one dot short of it, and two checkers. The 30 tiles under marks are ten symbols at 2, 4 and 8 Combining Diacritical Marks, never more.
Tips
Search knows the control codes: esc finds 3 tiles, delete 4 and nul 2.
In Glitch strings, ▓▒░ name ░▒▓ copies with the word name inside: paste it, then type over the word.
A heavy glitch tile carries 8 marks that rise and fall past the line, so give it its own line.
Questions and answers
What is the glitch symbol?
There is no single one. The nearest is , the replacement character, which software writes in place of a character it could not read. For the look of a failing screen, fade the shade blocks into each other, as in █▓▒░, or stack marks on a symbol.
OBJ symbol copy and paste: why does the tile look empty?
OBJ is U+FFFC, the object replacement character: it marks where a picture or other object sits in text. Unicode gives it no visible shape: the chart's dashed box holding OBJ is a label. On our Mac, Arial drew that box and the system font nothing.
How do I make glitched symbols of my own?
Each of the 30 here is one symbol followed by 2, 4 or 8 combining marks, picked once and stored. To stack marks on your own words and set how many land on each letter, use the zalgo text generator.

⎕APL functional symbol quadU+2395 APL functional symbol quad. Miscellaneous Technical block, Unicode 3.0. An APL programming sign that is a plain upright box; Unicode cross-refers it to the white vertical rectangle.
〓Geta markU+3013 Geta mark. CJK Symbols and Punctuation block, Unicode 1.1. Japanese printing uses it as a substitute for an ideograph the font does not have, Unicode notes. Comes in a full-width cell.
OBJ, the object replacement characterU+FFFC Object replacement character. Specials block, Unicode 2.1. A placeholder that marks where a picture or other object sits in a run of text. It has no shape of its own: the Unicode chart shows a dashed box holding the letters OBJ, its sign for a character with nothing to draw. When we tested, Arial drew that box and the Mac system font drew nothing at all, so this tile may look empty and still copy.
⍰Question mark in a boxU+2370 APL functional symbol quad question. Miscellaneous Technical block, Unicode 1.1. A sign from the APL programming language that happens to look like a missing-character box. Unlike a real missing character it shows the same box on every device.
Replacement characterU+FFFD Replacement character. Specials block, Unicode 1.1. The character software writes in place of one it could not read: Unicode calls it the general substitute character. It is often drawn as a question mark in a diamond. Pasted on purpose it looks like broken text and is perfectly valid text.
▯Tofu box, the white vertical rectangleU+25AF White vertical rectangle. Geometric Shapes block, Unicode 1.1. The small upright rectangle that many systems draw when no font has a character, nicknamed tofu. This one is a character in its own right, so it stays a box everywhere.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed by hand. Every character was checked against UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt): the code points and the character names in the notes come from that file, names in sentence case. Block names come from Blocks.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/Blocks.txt) and the Unicode version each character arrived in from DerivedAge.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/DerivedAge.txt), both version 18.0.0. Other names and uses of a character come from the annotations in NamesList.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt). That is where the 25%, 50% and 75% of the three shades, speckles fill, solid, the notes on the object replacement character (a placeholder in text for an otherwise unspecified object) and on the replacement character (used to replace an incoming character whose value is unknown or unrepresentable in Unicode), the missing ideograph note of the white square, the geta mark as a substitute for an ideograph not in the font, graphic for space, undoable delete, ISO 2047, clear key, escape, the two delete keys, closed entry, tensor product, the IEEE 1621 power symbol and End of Transmission come from; the build stops if one of them changes. Which characters have an emoji form, and the text-style sequences that keep them plain, come from emoji-data.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-data.txt) and emoji-variation-sequences.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-variation-sequences.txt), version 18.0.0. The name and the abbreviation of each control code behind a control picture (null and NUL, escape and ESC, delete and DEL) come from NameAliases.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NameAliases.txt). The Control Pictures block has 42 characters in 18.0.0: 37 from Unicode 1.1, 2 from 3.0 and 3 from 16.0 (U+2427 to U+2429), counted from DerivedAge.txt; 18.0.0 adds none. That the replacement character is the general substitute character, and that the object replacement character is an insertion point for objects in a stream of text, is from the Unicode Standard, Version 18.0, section 23.8 (https://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode18.0.0/core-spec/chapter-23/). That the code charts show a character with no visible display as a dashed box round a short abbreviation of its name is from section 24.1.2 of the same standard (the dashed box convention) (https://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode18.0.0/core-spec/chapter-24/), and the Specials chart of Version 18.0 shows U+FFFC as a dashed box holding OBJ (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/charts/PDF/UFFF0.pdf). That many fonts draw the replacement character as a question mark in a diamond (a rhombus) is from Wikipedia's article Specials (Unicode block) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specials_(Unicode_block)). That the small rectangles shown for characters no installed font has are nicknamed tofu is from Wikipedia's article Noto fonts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noto_fonts). What draws is our own test and not a promise about any other device: on 2026-09-20 every character here was drawn with the system fonts of one Mac. Every control picture from U+2400 to U+2426 drew; the three from Unicode 16.0, the uncertainty sign U+2BD1 and the shades of Symbols for Legacy Computing drew as empty boxes and are left out. U+FFFC left no ink in the system font and drew as a dashed box holding OBJ in Arial on the same machine. The glitched symbols and the four marked strings were made once, with fixed seeds, by the same function and the same 106 combining marks (Combining Diacritical Marks block) that this site's zalgo text generator uses, and are stored as fixed strings; the build checks every mark against UnicodeData.txt. No character carries more than 8 marks, and nothing here is a string known to crash or freeze an app. Which characters read as a glitch, the tile names that are not Unicode names, and every ready-made string are this site's own choice and assembly. The Unicode data files were checked on 2026-09-19; NameAliases.txt, the Unicode Standard pages, the Specials chart and the two Wikipedia articles were read on 2026-09-20. Licence: own work
