Gods' names in cuneiform

Seven cuneiform rows are whole words. Five are names that open with ๐’€ญ, dingir, the silent sign for a god: ๐’€ญ๐’ˆน is Inanna and ๐’€ญ๐’„‘๐’‚†๐’ˆฆ is Gilgamesh.

If you see empty boxes

These scripts joined Unicode late: runes in 1999, Linear B in 2003, Phoenician and cuneiform in 2006, the Roman signs in 2008, hieroglyphs in 2009. A device with no font for a script draws an empty box, though the character still copies. โ˜ฅ, โ˜ง and รพ date from 1993 and sit under Plain relatives. The last 10 rows need a rarer font: the Phaistos Disc signs, ๐†œ and ๐† .

Tips
  • The Unicode block named Ancient Symbols holds no hieroglyphs or runes: 13 Roman signs, ๐†– for the denarius among them, and one Greek monogram.
  • A rune's Unicode name is several names in a row. แš  is fehu feoh fe F: Elder Futhark, Anglo-Saxon, Younger Futhark, then the letter.
  • The Phaistos Disc was made by pressing a stamp for each sign into soft clay, an early example of movable type. Nobody has read it.

Questions and answers

Which Eye of Horus symbol can I copy and paste?

๐“‚€, the first row: Egyptian hieroglyph D010, U+13080, which Unicode describes as an eye with the markings of the head of a falcon. The wedjat eye stood for well-being, healing and protection. ๐“น is the plain eye.

What do the rune symbols mean?

Each Elder Futhark rune has a reconstructed name, and the name is a word: แš  fehu is cattle or wealth, แšข ลซruz aurochs, แ› the god Tyr. Some names are uncertain, and the meaning of แ›ˆ is unknown. All 24 are under Runes, in order.

Can I write my name in runes or hieroglyphs?

Each rune row gives the letter it stands for, so แš  is f and แšฑ is r, and a name can be copied one rune at a time. For hieroglyphs, the Egyptian font generator on this site turns typed letters into signs.

How do I type ancient symbols on a keyboard?

Only รพ has codes: Alt+0254 and þ. The rest have no Alt code, Option key or named HTML entity, so copy them. In HTML, write the number: 𓂀 is ๐“‚€ and ᚠ is แš .

How this list was compiled: Every name, and the code point it belongs to, is checked against UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt), and printed in sentence case. Headings, aliases, notes and cross-references are from NamesList.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt), versions from DerivedAge.txt, blocks from Blocks.txt and years from https://www.unicode.org/history/publicationdates.html. Hieroglyphs: the description, function and value of each sign are from Unikemet.txt 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/Unikemet.txt), checked against the same line in NamesList.txt, and the Gardiner number is that file's catalogue value without its zero padding; values written with a letter few fonts hold are left out. The common names and meanings are from the Wikipedia articles Eye of Horus, Khepri, Uraeus, Djed, Was-sceptre, Tyet, Shen ring, Cartouche and Maat. Runes: order, transliteration, reconstructed name and meaning are from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Elder_Futhark (a question mark there is printed as uncertain); the naming of runes in Unicode is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runic_%28Unicode_block%29. Cuneiform: the Wikipedia articles Dingir, Lugal, Ki (cuneiform), ร‰ (temple), EN (cuneiform), A (cuneiform), Giลก, Shamash, Inanna, Enki, Enlil, Gilgamesh and Babylonian cuneiform numerals; every made row was checked to appear, character for character, in its article, except Eleven, which follows the stated rule that ๐’น counts units and ๐’Œ‹ counts tens. Phoenician: names, meanings and the Greek and Latin descendants are from the two tables of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenician_alphabet; a question mark there is printed as may mean. Linear B: the meaning is the character's own Unicode name; the general statement is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_B. Roman signs: fractions are read from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Roman_units_of_measurement; coin values from the articles Denarius, Quinarius, Sestertius, Dupondius and As (Roman coin); also Uncia (unit), Centuria, Staurogram and Ancient Symbols (Unicode block). The group holds every assigned character of the block U+10190 to U+101CF. Phaistos Disc: sign numbers, names and counts are read from the table of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phaistos_Disc, which has 45 signs. All Wikipedia pages were fetched as raw wikitext on 2026-09-20. The last group holds characters that one ordinary computer had no font for on the day this list was checked; your device may differ. What is listed is this site's selection: no script is here whole except the 24 Elder Futhark runes, the 22 Phoenician letters and the Ancient Symbols block. Meanings of runes are reconstructions and meanings of hieroglyphs depend on context, so a gloss here is the cited source's, not the only one. The Start here group and the order are this site's own choice. Where a row says in short, the hieroglyph description is shortened from Unikemet.txt; the other descriptions are Unicode's words.
