How it works

No witch, but five files under the word

Witch emoji copy and paste comes with a catch: no emoji is named witch, and no Unicode character has the word in its name. CLDR files five emoji under it: Mage, Man mage, Woman mage, Magic wand and Broom. Nothing is filed under cauldron or potion, so Pot of food and Alembic stand in.

The undead, counted

Zombie emoji copy and paste has three tiles to choose from, and vampire emoji copy and paste has three more. CLDR files five emoji under vampire, the other two being Bat and Coffin. The vampires and mages take a skin tone, six tiles in all. The zombies take none.

Tips
  • Halloween symbols copy and paste where emoji are refused: seven are plain characters, including two cauldrons and a map's headstone.
  • CLDR files nothing under spooky, so spooky symbols copy and paste means our five keyboard drawings, witch hat to mummy.
  • Black cat, Magic wand and Headstone are the newest, Emoji 13.0. The ASCII witch and mummy want a monospaced font.

Questions and answers

How many Halloween emoji are there?

Eleven, by CLDR's filing, and the bat is not one of them. Jack-o-lantern is the only character whose Unicode notes say Halloween, and none has the word in its name. The pumpkin, the ghost and the bat have pages of their own.

Is a black cat bad luck?

That depends on the country. CLDR files Black cat under unlucky, while Wikipedia's Black cat article says that in England one crossing your path is considered good luck. The emoji is a sum: the cat emoji joined to a black square.

Why are there no pumpkin or ghost drawings here?

Because they live elsewhere. The drawings here are a witch on a broom, a coffin, fangs, a mummy and a bowl on the porch, which Wikipedia's Trick-or-treating article says some houses leave out on the honour system. Halloween ASCII art has the pumpkins.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed by hand. The emoji, their names, code points and Emoji version numbers come from emoji-test.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt); names are the CLDR short names printed in that file, in sentence case. The search words are from the CLDR English annotations (https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotations/en.xml and https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotationsDerived/en.xml, main branch). CLDR lists halloween for eleven emoji (ghost, three vampires, three zombies, black cat, chocolate bar, candy, jack-o-lantern); witch for five (three mages, magic wand, broom); zombie for the three zombies; vampire for the three vampires, the bat and the coffin; treat for the cupcake alone; mask for five emoji, the ogre and the goblin among them; skeleton for the bone and the x-ray; and nothing for spooky, creepy, haunted, cobweb, cauldron, potion, trick, costume, knock, candy corn, mummy or werewolf. The vampires and the mages take skin tones and the zombies do not. The other emoji on the page are our own picks. The text forms come from emoji-variation-sequences.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-variation-sequences.txt). Every character that is not an emoji was checked against UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt), and a note that names a character uses its name from that file. Notes about what a character is used for come from the annotations in NamesList.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt). No character has HALLOWEEN, WITCH, PUMPKIN or SPOOK in its name; U+1F383 Jack-o-lantern carries the note Halloween. Three characters have SKULL in the name (U+2620, which carries the note poison, U+1F480 and U+1F571, the one that is not an emoji); two have HEADSTONE (U+26FC, noted as graveyard, memorial park, cemetery, and the emoji U+1FAA6); two have CAULDRON (U+2FC0 and U+4DF1); two have SPIDERY (the Glagolitic capital and small letter spidery ha). Meanings of Chinese characters come from the kDefinition field of Unihan_Readings.txt in Unihan.zip, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/Unihan.zip). What the page says about the real things is from English Wikipedia, read as wikitext on 2026-09-19: Trick-or-treating (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trick-or-treating), Halloween costume (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween_costume; the article carries a cleanup tag), Jack-o'-lantern (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack-o%27-lantern), Witch hat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_hat), Black cat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_cat), Zombie (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie), Spider (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider), Spider web (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider_web), Cauldron (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cauldron), Broom (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broom), Haunted house (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haunted_house), Apple bobbing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_bobbing), Candy corn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candy_corn) and Mummy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummy). The 5 keyboard drawings, 6 dividers, 12 lines, 5 ASCII drawings and 8 combos are this site's own work: the emoji in them are fetched by name from emoji-test.txt, the plain characters by code point from UnicodeData.txt, and the drawings were made for this page.
