One season, three names

Wikipedia's Autumn article says fall is the North American English name, a contraction of older phrases such as fall of the leaf. Before the 16th century, it says, English usually called the season harvest, so Sheaf of rice has a claim. Autumn, as a Han character takes no side: Unihan defines it as autumn, fall; year.

Fall symbols, no emoji

For fall symbols copy and paste, Unicode has one character with autumn in its name: Mahjong tile: autumn, U+1F028. None has fall as a word of its name. Leaves do better: Unicode's notes call Floral heart the Aldus leaf, and two ivy leaf bullets open and close a line. Kangxi radical leaf is a trap: the leaf it stands for is a page.

Tips
  • CLDR has nothing under acorn, sweater or bonfire, so a search for acorn leads with Chestnut, sweater with Scarf and bonfire with Fire.
  • Leafless tree is the newest tile, Emoji 16.0: an empty box on an older phone. Fog, Candle and six more have a text form.
  • The ASCII drawings need a monospaced font to hold their shape. Rake, with results is the widest at 23 columns: rake, then pile.

Questions and answers

Is there an acorn emoji?

No: no Unicode character has acorn as a word of its name. Chestnut is the closest, and the ASCII Acorn is seven rows tall. Wikipedia says jays and squirrels that hoard acorns end up planting them, so Winter savings pastes a chipmunk and three chestnuts.

Why do leaves change colour in fall?

Wikipedia's Autumn leaf color article says the yellow was already in the leaf, masked by the green of chlorophyll during summer. The reds and purples come from anthocyanins, actively produced in autumn. Every colour a leaf goes pastes five hearts: yellow, orange, red, purple, brown.

How do I write fall where emoji are not allowed?

Use the plain-text leaves. One line puts an Aldus leaf each side of hello fall, and another is a three-leaf divider. They are ordinary characters and take the colour of your words. Umbrella, no emoji selector covers the rain. Text dividers has more rows.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed by hand. The emoji, their names, code points and Emoji version numbers come from emoji-test.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt); names are the CLDR short names printed in that file, in sentence case. The search words are from the CLDR English annotations (https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotations/en.xml and https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotationsDerived/en.xml, main branch). CLDR lists fall for one emoji (fallen leaf) and autumn for two (fallen leaf, moon cake); the maple leaf is under falling, leaf and maple. It lists nothing for acorn, harvest, sweater, cozy, rake, cider, hay, scarecrow, equinox, foliage, bonfire or campfire, pumpkin for two emoji (pie, jack-o-lantern) and squirrel for one (chipmunk). Everything past the first two tiles is our own pick. The text forms come from emoji-variation-sequences.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-variation-sequences.txt). Every character that is not an emoji was checked against UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt), and a note that names a character uses its name from that file. Notes about what a character is used for come from the annotations in NamesList.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt). One character has AUTUMN as a word of its name (U+1F028 Mahjong tile autumn), none has FALL, ACORN or HARVEST, and 22 have LEAF. U+2766 is glossed Aldus leaf, U+2767 hedera, ivy leaf, U+2619 a binding signature mark, U+2602 rainy weather, U+2614 showery weather. U+1F028, U+2766, U+2767, U+2619, U+1F65A and U+2FB4 are not in emoji-test.txt. Meanings of Chinese characters come from the kDefinition field of Unihan_Readings.txt in Unihan.zip, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/Unihan.zip). What the page says about the season (fall in North American English, from fall of the leaf; harvest as the older name; pumpkins and apples; shorter days; trees changing colour and shedding; the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival) is from the English Wikipedia article Autumn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autumn). The leaf colours (chlorophyll, carotenoids, anthocyanins, the five shades, leaf peeping) are from Autumn leaf color (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autumn_leaf_color), the moon cake from Mooncake (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mooncake), the acorn and who hoards it from Acorn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acorn). All four were read on 2026-09-19. The 15 lines, 6 ASCII drawings and 9 combos are this site's own work: the emoji in them are fetched by name from emoji-test.txt, the plain characters by name from UnicodeData.txt, and the drawings were made for this page.
