Two ready sets, and two signs for silver
Row five copies the four elements together, 🜂🜄🜁🜃, and row nine the three primes, 🜍☿🜔. Silver is ☽, the Moon, and the alchemy block adds 🜛, a form of the silver sign from Isaac Newton's papers. Arsenic has one sign, 🜺.
If you see empty boxes
The block's first 116 signs joined Unicode in 2010, and a device with no font for them draws an empty box. Try the seven metals first: ☉ ☽ ☿ ♀ ♂ ♃ ♄ are planet signs from 1993. The last three rows date from 2026.
Tips
Alchemists never shared one notation. A 1928 inventory counted 3,695 symbols and variants and was still not complete, so Unicode's 119 are a selection.
🜊 is named vinegar, yet Unicode lists ten other readings for it, crucible, borax and wine among them.
Questions and answers
What are the four element symbols in alchemy?
Fire is 🜂, an upward triangle, and water is 🜄, a downward one. Air is 🜁, the fire triangle with a bar through it, and earth is 🜃, the water triangle with a bar. 🜀 is quintessence, the fifth element Aristotle added.
What are the symbols of the seven metals?
Each metal took a planet's sign: gold ☉, silver ☽, quicksilver ☿, copper ♀, iron ♂, tin ♃ and lead ♄. The pairing is attested from the 7th century and began to break down in the 16th, when antimony, bismuth and zinc were found.
What is the alchemical symbol for tin?
♃, U+2643, the Jupiter sign: Unicode gives it the alias alchemical symbol for tin. The alchemy block has no sign for the metal itself, only 🜩 for tin ore, and Unicode points from that one back to ♃.
Is there a philosopher's stone symbol to copy?
Not as a character. The emblem usually shown for the stone is the squared circle, a 17th century drawing, and Unicode 18.0 has no character for it or named for the stone. 🜎, philosophers sulfur, is a different thing.
How do I type alchemy symbols on a keyboard?
None of the 119 has an Alt code, an Option key or a named HTML entity, so copy them. In HTML, write the number: 🜂 is 🜂. Of the metals, ♀ is Alt+12 or ♀ and ♂ is Alt+11 or ♂.
