Pick the script
Almendra is a heavy chancery hand, the easiest to read. MedievalSharp is light and rounded, drawn by a stone carver for inscriptions. Uncial Antiqua follows uncial, the all-capitals book hand of the 4th to 8th centuries: its H looks like an h. UnifrakturMaguntia is true Fraktur. Metamorphous is a display face whose u is pointed like a v. New look deals 16 designs.
Red ink, gold and the frame
Blood red is here because medieval scribes added headings and opening letters in red, hence the word rubric. The Gold look on Black or Night blue stands in for gilding. Frame is a double rule in the letter colour. Under More options, Shape has Every line full width, which stretches each line to the frame.
Tips
- In UnifrakturMaguntia the Y of Ye reads like a looped V. Keep Fraktur to words the reader already expects.
- Blackletter is called Old English only as a nickname: the Old English language is centuries older than the script.
Questions and answers
Which font works for a campaign handout?
One the players can read across a table: Almendra or MedievalSharp for anything longer than a title, UnifrakturMaguntia for a word or two on the map. As a dnd font generator it has no game's own lettering: all five fonts are open-licence.
Does it work as a diploma font generator?
For the name line, yes: keep Frame, pick UnifrakturMaguntia and type one name. Set the small print in Almendra as a second picture. Use it for certificates you give out yourself, not to copy a real institution's.
Does it have Nordic letters and runes?
The letters, yes. Blackletter stayed common for Danish, Norwegian and Swedish until the 1870s, and all five fonts have þ, ð, æ, ø and å. None has runes: your device draws those in its own font.
Which font looks Renaissance, not medieval?
Metamorphous, the nearest of the five: it mixes Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance letter shapes, by its makers' account. It sets about a quarter wider than Almendra, so keep the wording short.
Can I get an illuminated first letter?
Not in one go: every letter shares one font, colour and size. The workaround is two pictures: the first letter in the Gold look, with Background on Transparent and Decoration on None so the file is cut to the letter, then the rest in black.
