What the scissors do
There is no font menu: a ransom note font generator deals for you. Each letter gets a font, a scrap, a size from 85 to 130 percent and a tilt of up to 8 degrees. About one letter in three swaps case. The note opens in 6 fonts, and the first Reshuffle brings in all 10. Bangers has capitals only, so its letters always shout.
Paper and background
Paper changes the scraps and nothing else: fonts, sizes and tilts stay put. Newsprint is off-white with black ink, plus the odd red or navy letter. Magazine has 8 loud pairs, from yellow to purple. Cardboard is 4 browns. Background is the sheet behind the scraps: newsprint glows on Black.
Tips
- The limit is 80 characters, about five rows. Two or three short words are cut more than twice as big.
- Words stay whole up to about 15 letters, and a long one shrinks every scrap. Enter starts a new line.
- A Transparent download is trimmed to the scraps. Any other background saves the whole sheet, 2400 by 1200 pixels.
Questions and answers
Why does a ransom font generator need so many fonts?
Because the mix is the look. Typographers call too many typefaces at once the ransom note effect. This page deals from 10: a typewriter, two heavy sans, a slab, three serifs, a saloon face, a comic and a fat script.
Is this a ransom note text generator I can paste into a chat?
It makes a picture, not text: pasted text carries no paper, tilt or font. After your first note, Copy picture puts the PNG on the clipboard. For typewriter-width letters that paste as text, use the monospace text generator.
Where does the look come from?
From scissors and glue, long before software. Cut-out letters were a device of Dada collage first. Punk flyers, zines and record sleeves took them up, cut from newspapers and magazines, and the photocopier made hundreds of copies cheap.
