How it works

The family emoji is Family, U+1F46A: one tap copies it. Unicode defines 29 more, each a row of people held by invisible joiners. Emoji 18.0 lists no skin tone for the 30, so 25 lineups of separate people take one.

Pick the household, then copy

Families are grouped by their adults: no gender shown, man and woman, two men, two women, one man, one woman. Each gendered group has the same five sets of children, from one boy to two girls. Search also reads search words: grandma finds the grandparents and royal finds Crown, the one emoji outside the 30 that CLDR files under family.

Why some phones show silhouettes

UTS #51, Unicode's emoji report, encourages makers to draw families as generically as possible, silhouettes included, and lets a gendered family look like the plain one. So Family: man, woman, girl can arrive as three plain figures. The code points you sent are unchanged. A device with no drawing drops the joiners and shows the people side by side.

Tips
  • Choose a skin tone under More options before copying a lineup: every person in it changes, and the 30 families do not.
  • No family emoji has a baby. For a birth, use Lineup: man, woman, baby; CLDR files Baby bottle under newborn.
  • For a display name, Family is the safe pick: one code point, so it cannot come apart into separate people.

Questions and answers

Why does the family emoji have no skin tones?

Emoji 18.0 lists no skin tone for any of the 30, so the tone picker has nothing to switch. UTS #51 says other combinations can be valid without being recommended. The lineups get round it: single people side by side, each with the same tone.

How many family emoji are there?

Thirty. Family came first. Emoji 2.0 added 15 two-parent families, Emoji 4.0 added 10 with one parent, and Emoji 15.1 added four with no gender stated. When a family has a daughter and a son, the girl is listed first.

Can I make a family that is not on the list?

Only as a lineup. Each of the 29 joined families is one or two adults with one or two children, and none has a grandparent or a pet. Put the people side by side instead, as Lineup: old woman, woman, girl does for three generations.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed by hand. The first six groups are every fully-qualified emoji in emoji-test.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt) whose name is family or starts with family: there are 30, the file lists no skin tone for any of them (emoji-sequences.txt, version 18.0, https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-sequences.txt, has no family modifier sequence either), and none contains Baby. Names are the CLDR short names printed in that file, in sentence case; code points and Emoji version numbers are from the same file, and the script checks that each joined family is exactly its people held together by U+200D. The search words quoted in the notes are from the CLDR English annotations (https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotations/en.xml and https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotationsDerived/en.xml, main branch), where Crown is the only emoji outside the 30 to carry the word family. What Unicode says about drawing families (one or two adults with one or two children, silhouettes encouraged, gendered families allowed to look the same as the plain ones, and separate emoji as the fallback when a joined sequence has no drawing) is from UTS #51, version 18.0, revision 31, sections 2.5 and 2.6.1 (https://www.unicode.org/reports/tr51/). The 25 lineups are this site's own: single people from the same file placed side by side with no joiner, each followed by the same skin tone modifier from that file. Text forms are from emoji-variation-sequences.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-variation-sequences.txt). Every character in the 10 text items was checked against UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt); the ages come from DerivedAge.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/DerivedAge.txt), the heading Genealogical symbols over U+26AD to U+26AF from NamesList.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt), the name HANGUL SYLLABLE US for U+C6C3 from the rule in Jamo.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/Jamo.txt), and the meaning of U+5BB6 (house, home, residence; family) from the Unihan database (https://www.unicode.org/cgi-bin/GetUnihanData.pl?codepoint=5BB6). Wikipedia's List of emoticons records the three-face kaomoji joined by U+4EBA as Friendly (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons).
