How it works

Thirty-five pieces of car text art, all drawn for this page: saloons, a stretch limo, a race car, a taxi, a tractor, a car park seen from above. The shortest is one line and the tallest is 10, and every side view faces right.

Find the right vehicle

The sections go by height: 4 one-liners, 13 small, 16 medium, 2 large. Fits a comment box marks the 31 within 8 lines and 30 columns, this site's rule of thumb and no app's promise. Search reads words the names leave out: truck finds six pieces, three of them named something else, and prom finds the stretch limo.

Put your own words on the side

Six pieces hold words to type over. The plate on the car at the top takes 9 characters, the bus's route board 17, the lorry's trailer 16, the taxi's roof sign 4, and the squash-proof lorry 12 with a dot for each space. Follow a shorter word with spaces, or the wall to its right moves in. Search editable for all six.

Tips
  • The car ascii art for a username is Car grille, one line: (O)=[|||||||]=(O), 17 characters.
  • To face a car left, pad every line to one length, reverse it, swap / with \, ( with ) and ` with ', then retype letters: TAXI arrives as IXAT.
  • Stretch limo stretches: add three underscores to the roof, one more |__ to the windows and three hyphens to the sill.

Questions and answers

Why did the roof slide off my car?

Runs of spaces shrank to one and the upper lines slid left off the wheels. Squash-proof keeps the 9 pieces with no run. Markdown takes a roof of underscores for bold or a rule: put three backticks above and below. The cat page covers both.

Is there a car I can paste as one character?

Several, and no piece here uses one: 🚗 Automobile (U+1F697), 🚕 Taxi (U+1F695), 🚌 Bus (U+1F68C), 🚚 Delivery truck (U+1F69A) and 🚜 Tractor (U+1F69C). Each is an emoji, so the device draws it, and Unicode's emoji standard lets a vendor face it left or right. See the car emoji page.

What is an ascii art car made of?

Mostly underscores, slashes and brackets. Wheels set the scale: a bare o on the two-line car, (o) on the small saloon, (_) on the coupe and taxi, .--. over `--' on the pickup and vans, ( o ) on Vintage car. Monster truck spends five of eight lines on wheels.

All 35 pieces

One line 4

  • Car fuel gauge Empty on the left, full on the right, seven bars of fourteen showing. Swap a dot for a bar to fill up. 1 line, 20 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Car grille, one line Two round headlights and seven grille bars, seen from the front. Short enough for a name. 1 line, 17 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Car number plate, one line A plate with a bolt at each end. Type over BEEP 123 with anything, because a one-line piece has no wall to keep straight. 1 line, 14 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Two cars on a road Two small cars on a line of underscores, both heading the same way. Add underscores between them for a safer gap. 1 line, 24 wide. Keyboard characters only.

Small, 2 to 4 lines 13

  • Broken-down car A small saloon with three curls of steam coming off the bonnet. Delete the top line for a milder fault. 4 lines, 18 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Car gear stick pattern The H pattern off the top of a gear knob: five forward gears and reverse. No run of spaces, so nothing can squash it. 3 lines, 5 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Car park, one space left Four bays seen from above, three of them taken, and a P in the empty one. 4 lines, 25 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Low sports coupe A long bonnet, a small cabin set well back and a sloping nose. It faces right. 4 lines, 27 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Race car with a rear wing An open-wheel racer facing right: rear wing, a helmet in the cockpit and a front wing on the nose. 4 lines, 27 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Small saloon car Three lines: a roof, a line of windows with one door pillar, and a sill with two wheels. It faces right. 3 lines, 13 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Squash-proof bus Five windows, a sloping windscreen and a bumper, drawn without one space. 4 lines, 17 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Squash-proof lorry A box lorry with SEND CAKE on the side. Type over the words and keep a dot wherever a space would go: 12 characters between the walls. 4 lines, 20 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Squash-proof pickup truck The load bed is filled with colons where the spaces would be, so every column stays where it was put. 3 lines, 15 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Squash-proof tiny car Two lines with no space anywhere in them. 2 lines, 11 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Stretch limo Seven windows long. To stretch it, add three underscores to the roof, one more window to the middle line and three hyphens to the sill. 3 lines, 30 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Tiny car, two lines A roof, two wheels and nothing else, 8 characters wide. The smallest car here that still has a windscreen. 2 lines, 8 wide. Keyboard characters only.
  • Wedding car with tin cans Three cans on a string behind the bumper and three hearts drifting off the back. The hearts are typed as <3, so everything here is on a keyboard. 4 lines, 30 wide. Keyboard characters only.

Medium, 5 to 9 lines 16

  • Monster truck A small pickup body on two wheels that are each taller than it is. 8 lines, 18 wide. Keyboard characters only.

How this list was compiled: Every piece was drawn for this page and checked in a monospaced font on 2026-09-19; none is copied from an archive or another site. The set covers cars from the side, the front and above, from a two-line runabout to a filled silhouette; working vehicles (pickup, lorry, bus, camper van, fire engine, tractor, taxi); six pieces with words to type over; a few things from the road and the dashboard; four one-liners; and five pieces drawn without a single run of spaces. Each character was looked up in the Unicode Character Database, version 18.0.0: names and categories in https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt, width classes in https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/EastAsianWidth.txt, the Emoji property in https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-data.txt, all read on 2026-09-19. Keyboard characters only means the 95 printable ASCII characters, U+0020 to U+007E. Squash-proof means no line starts with a space and no two spaces touch. The comment box badge means at most 8 lines and 30 columns: a rule of thumb of this site, not a promise about any app. Licence: own work
