Three blackletters
Grenze Gotisch is bold and rounded, the easiest of the three to read. Pirata One is a narrow textura. UnifrakturMaguntia is a lighter fraktur with ornate capitals, and a word typed all in capitals in it is close to unreadable. People call the style Old English, though it has nothing to do with the language.
Chicano cursive: four scripts
Engagement is upright and the narrowest font here, so long phrases come out largest in it. Alex Brush leans and flows. Lobster is bold and joined, and carries Chrome best. Sevillana has curled capitals. Give it Pen weight under Look, then Pen blue and Old paper under More options, and it looks like ballpoint.
Tips
- Arch sets everything you type on one line. For two lines, pick Straight or Every line full width under Shape.
- Only 3 of the 16 New look designs are arched. Arch under Shape curves any of the others.
- For a lowrider font, pick Lobster in Chrome on Black. Script gets airbrushed on cars, with murals, pinstripes and flames.
Questions and answers
Can I take the picture to a tattoo artist?
Yes. The page is free, and the seven fonts are open-licence, so the picture is yours to use. Treat it as a reference: a font repeats each letter the same way and hand lettering does not, so expect your artist to redraw it.
Where does the name cholo font generator come from?
From the culture Wikipedia ties the lettering to. It traces black-and-gray tattooing to prisons in the 1970s and 1980s, within Chicano and cholo culture in Los Angeles, and its article on cholo culture calls cholo graffiti a unique writing and lettering style.
Is this a mexican font generator?
Partly. Wikipedia defines Chicano as an ethnic identity for Mexican Americans, and this page draws the blackletter and script of Chicano tattoo and lowrider art, not lettering from Mexico. Spanish sets correctly: all seven fonts have ñ, the accented vowels, ¿ and ¡.
Is a gangsta font generator the same thing?
The lettering is the same, but the label is an outsider's. Wikipedia's article on cholo culture records police and other institutions equating cholo style with gang membership. The lettering itself comes from tattoo, graffiti and lowrider art.
