What CLDR files under fishing

Search reads names and CLDR's search words. Six emoji carry the word fishing: the fishing pole, the fish, the otter and the three people rowing a boat. Hook and net with handle are filed under catch instead, so a search for catch finds them.

Text that keeps its shape

Gone fishing and FISH ON are styled letters, not a font, so they paste into a bio or a status. The two ASCII drawings keep their lines only where text is monospaced, such as a code block.

Tips
  • Fish has a plain text form: switch to Text style for a black-and-white 🐟 that takes the colour of your words.

Questions and answers

Is there a koi fish emoji?

No. No emoji in Unicode's list, version 18.0, is named or tagged koi. Tropical fish, the striped reef fish, is the usual stand-in; Fish is plainer.

Is there a fishing rod or reel emoji?

The rod is Fishing pole, 🎣, from Emoji 0.6, with its line and a fish on the end. No emoji is named or tagged reel. Hook and Worm both arrived in Emoji 13.0.

What does 🎣 mean in a message?

Usually gone fishing, or fishing for something: a compliment, an answer, a reaction. Unicode files it under sport, and CLDR lists entertainment, fish, fishing, pole and sport for it.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-23, not typed by hand. The emoji, their names, code points and Emoji version numbers come from emoji-test.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt); names are the CLDR short names printed in that file, in sentence case. The search words are from the CLDR English annotations (https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotations/en.xml and https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotationsDerived/en.xml, main branch). CLDR lists the search word fishing for six emoji (fishing pole, fish, otter and the three people rowing a boat). No emoji is named or tagged rod, reel or koi. The text forms come from emoji-variation-sequences.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-variation-sequences.txt). Every character that is not an emoji was checked against UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt), and a note that names a character uses its name from that file. The styled words, the one-line drawings, the two ASCII drawings and the ten combos are this site's own work: the styled letters are assembled from character names and the drawings were made for this page. The Unicode and CLDR files were downloaded by this family on 2026-09-19 and read again on 2026-09-23. Licence: own work
