How it works

This exponent text generator raises the numbers in a line, so x2 comes back as x². A second row is a full superscript generator that raises the letters too. Some apps strip or block these characters, and screen readers may read them badly.

Powers first, raised letters second

The large card, Numbers only, raises every digit and nothing else: cm3 becomes cm³. Whole line, under it, raises letters, signs and brackets too. For a negative or lettered power, type only the exponent: n+1 gives ⁿ⁺¹. The table holds 34 ready-made pieces, from m² to 10⁻¹².

Where the raised letters came from

Unicode never added a raised alphabet. The 26 small letters sit in five blocks and arrived between June 1993 and September 2021. A W3C note says most were encoded for phonetic transcription. Raised q came last, with Unicode 14.0. A font made before then shows an empty box, so Whole line keeps q plain.

Tips
  • Numbers only raises the base too: 10-3 comes back as ¹⁰-³. Type -3 alone, copy ⁻³ from Whole line and paste it after your 10.
  • The Italian 1º and 1ª use the ordinal indicators U+00BA and U+00AA. Wikipedia records that the raised letters ᵒ and ᵃ are different characters.
  • There is no raised π. Whole line raises six Greek letters: β, γ, δ, φ, χ and θ. Unicode 18.0 added ψ and ω.

Questions and answers

How do I type a squared symbol?

Type 2 in the box and copy ² from Numbers only, or tap it in the table. It is U+00B2 Superscript two, which the Unicode chart also calls squared. Wikipedia records that ¹, ² and ³ came from ISO 8859-1.

What is the difference between an exponent and a superscript?

An exponent is the power a base is raised to, usually shown as a superscript. A superscript is anything set above the line: the charge of Na⁺, the 14 of ¹⁴C and the th of 4ᵗʰ are superscripts and not exponents.

Is there a superscript for every letter?

For every small letter, and for the capitals A to W. Unicode has no raised X, Y or Z. The rows here use small letters only, so a typed capital comes back small. For Aᵀ, tap the raised T in the table.

How do I write an exponent in HTML?

Use the sup element, which the HTML standard says represents a superscript. It raises any character, a capital X included, and a W3C note recommends markup for mathematics. These characters are for boxes with no formatting.

  • Raised n plus one U+207F U+207A U+00B9. The exponent of xⁿ⁺¹. Three characters: a raised n, a raised plus and a raised 1.
  • Raised two minus U+00B2 U+207B. A double negative charge: O₂²⁻ is the peroxide ion. The lowered 2 is on the subscript page.
  • Raised two plus U+00B2 U+207A. A double positive charge. The magnitude goes before the sign: He²⁺ is the alpha particle.

How this list was compiled: Built by a script from the Unicode Character Database, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt), checked on 2026-09-20; https://www.unicode.org/Public/UCD/latest/ucd/ReadMe.txt confirms 18.0.0 is the current version. The script took the characters whose decomposition is tagged <super>, which is how the database marks a raised form of another character. It found 308. This file holds 110 of them as single characters: the 10 digits, the 5 signs, 25 small letters (a to z without q), 6 Greek letters, the 2 ordinal indicators, the 5 raised marks (trade mark, service mark, MC, MD, MR), the 52 raised phonetic letters of Unicode 1.1 to 4.1 that stand for a Latin letter outside a to z, the capitals T and H for their use in matrix notation, and 3 recent letters (q from Unicode 14.0, Greek psi and omega from 18.0) that are in the table and in no row. The other 34 rows are short sequences of those characters with plain ones (exponents, units, powers of ten, ordinal endings), named by this site. Left out: the other raised capitals (A to W exist, X, Y and Z do not), which the tiny text page of this site lists; the 39 Cyrillic and 14 Kanbun characters, the Armenian, Georgian and Tifinagh ones and U+1D78, because nothing typed in English would use them; and the raised letters added after Unicode 4.1 other than q, psi and omega (the database counts 59 raised characters from 14.0 and 58 from 18.0), which are specialist additions for phonetic writing. The version that added each character comes from https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/DerivedAge.txt, its block from https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/Blocks.txt, the chart notes (squared, cubed, aspiration, palatalization, labialization, used in Canada) from https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt, and the release dates from https://www.unicode.org/history/publicationdates.html, all checked on 2026-09-20. The SI prefixes are from https://www.bipm.org/en/measurement-units/si-prefixes. The units, ions, isotopes, matrix and derivative notation and the ordinal endings were matched on 2026-09-20 to the English Wikipedia articles Hertz, Metre per second squared, Square metre, Cubic metre, Cubic centimetre, Square kilometre, Ion, Carbon-14, Uranium-235, Transpose, Conjugate transpose, Notation for differentiation, Area of a circle, Mass-energy equivalence, Ordinal indicator, Trademark symbol, Service mark symbol and Unicode subscripts and superscripts. The row for the raised minus takes a typed hyphen, although the character stands for U+2212 Minus sign, because a hyphen is what a keyboard types. Names of single characters are the official Unicode names in sentence case.
