How it works
This spiral text generator winds a sentence into a coil that reads clockwise from the outside in, in 9 fonts. About 25 characters go once round and the limit is 60, so the longest spiral is about two turns.

How the coil is wound
The first letter sits at the top of the outer ring and the last lands by the centre, so put the punchline last. Bend sets the tightness: at 100, where the page opens, the rings sit 1.1 font sizes apart, and at 0 they sit 1.9. The Phaistos Disc, a clay disc from Bronze Age Crete, winds the same way, and nobody has read that one yet.
The font sets the turn count
Wide letters travel further round. The sample makes about 1.7 turns in Bebas Neue, 1.9 in Oswald, 2.2 in Poppins and 2.4 in Cousine, whose even typewriter spacing suits a coil. New look deals 13 designs across the nine.
Tips
- Six letters cover under a third of a turn. Repeat a short word, or set Shape to Full circle.
- Enter only adds a space: a coil is one line, and your lines are joined into it.
- With Transparent and no decoration the PNG is cut to the coil; otherwise it is 2000 by 2000 pixels.
Questions and answers
Can the spiral run anticlockwise or start from the middle?
Not here. The tool draws one kind: clockwise, from the outside in, with the first letter at the top. Flipping the saved picture in an image editor reverses the letters too, so that does not help. Bend is the only control for the shape.
Why do the letters get smaller as I type?
The coil grows outwards with every letter. The drawing is scaled to stay inside the board, so each letter ends up smaller. A narrow font such as Bebas Neue or Oswald keeps them largest. Turning Bend down loosens the rings and shrinks the letters further.
Can I use the spiral on a card, a shirt or a logo?
Yes. All nine fonts carry an open licence, so the picture is yours, also on things you sell. For print press Download SVG, which stays sharp at any size. The PNG is 2000 pixels square, about 17 cm across at 300 dots per inch.
