Pensive, by the book
Unicode files Pensive face with its sleepy faces, between Relieved face and Sleepy face, and not with the frowns. CLDR makes up for it with dejected, disappointed, lost and sucks. It gives the word sad to 20 emoji, and all 20 are here.
Two frowns, and what arrives
For frown emoji copy and paste there are two faces. Slightly frowning face is the mild one. Frowning face is U+2639, in Unicode since version 1.1, followed by U+FE0F to ask for the colour drawing. Switch the style to text under More options and it goes out as an outline. CLDR files ten emoji under frown, and six are whole people who take a skin tone.

Which one is the pensive emoji?
Pensive face, U+1F614, labelled Emoji 0.6, the oldest label Unicode's list has. Disappointed face, U+1F61E, is on the next tile, and CLDR blurs the two: it lists disappointed among the search words for Pensive face. Tap each and keep the one your device draws better.
Is there a sad trombone emoji?
Yes: Trombone, from Emoji 17.0, so older devices show an empty box. CLDR files it under sad, next to brass, jazz and slide, and the combo Sad trombone puts it after Pensive face. The other 19 under sad are seventeen faces, Broken heart and Droplet.
Is :( the same thing as the frown emoji?
No. :( is two ASCII characters, a colon and a bracket, read sideways, and arrives anywhere text does. :-( adds a nose, and was proposed in 1982 in the same bulletin board message as :-). Frowning face is one character, U+2639, which needs a font.
