Sad Kaomoji

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed into the page by hand. The 90 entries are this site's own selection and arrangement, put together for this page from parts: drooping brows or eyes, or a mouth that turns down, and no tear anywhere. The best known forms are in common use and nobody owns them. Wikipedia's List of emoticons (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons, read 2026-09-19) glosses (´･ω･`) as Snubbed or deflated, ('A`) as Lonely and (..) as Looking down in sadness or boredom, and files orz, OTL, OTZ, STO, ＿|￣|○ and 囧rz under Despair, where the O is a head on the ground, the T or r the torso and the S or z the legs. Wikipedia's Emoticon article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoticon, read 2026-09-19) adds the form Or2, calls orz an emoticon representing a kneeling or bowing person, dates it to late 2002, and says 囧, U+56E7, means patterned window. The build script checks each of those against the fetched pages. The labels, groups and order are our own. What is left to other pages follows this family's own table and is nobody else's rule: any tear is crying, a sweat drop is nervous, a flat stare, a side eye or a sigh is annoyed, zzz or lying down is tired. Every character of every entry was looked up in UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt), and must be an assigned, visible character. The frowns are Presentation form for vertical left parenthesis (U+FE35) in 11 entries, Presentation form for vertical left angle bracket (U+FE3F) in 8, Presentation form for vertical left tortoise shell bracket (U+FE39) in 3 and Wavy low line (U+FE4F) in 7, all four from the block CJK Compatibility Forms, with Caret (U+2038) in 4 and Segment (U+2313) in 2. 20 entries hold both an acute accent and a grave accent, drawn as brows that droop at the outside. None of those characters has the Emoji property in emoji-data.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-data.txt); Disappointed face, U+1F61E, is an emoji by default and is left out with every other emoji. The Japanese words come from Wiktionary.
