How it works

The one you want is Smiling face with sunglasses, U+1F60E, at the top: one tap copies it. The pair with nobody behind it is a separate emoji, Sunglasses. The other 58 include more eyewear, text faces such as (βŒβ– _β– ) and combos.

Shades, eyewear and Shaka

Search reads Unicode names and CLDR search words, so shades finds the face, eyewear finds Sunglasses and Glasses, and Shaka finds Call me hand. Sunglasses also has a text form, U+1F576 with U+FE0E after it, so More options holds a switch between emoji and text style. Pick a skin tone there and the six hands, the surfer and four combos follow it.

What (βŒβ– _β– ) is made of

The glasses are a Reversed not sign, U+2310, and two Black squares, U+25A0. Both have a place in code page 437, an eight-bit PC character set. B-), 8-) and B-D are ASCII only. The last text face stacks Combining double overlines on half blocks, so it asks more of the font than the rest.

Tips
  • The face and the object are filed differently. CLDR gives Sunglasses dark and eyewear. Cool, rad, swag and slay all belong to the face.
  • Putting them on is the three-beat text joke in emoji: Neutral face, Sunglasses, then the face wearing them. CLDR lists deadpan for Neutral face.
  • CLDR files only four emoji under cool: this face, Face with tongue, Folding hand fan and COOL button. Cold face is not among them.

Questions and answers

Is the sunglasses emoji the face or the glasses?

Both exist, as separate characters. Smiling face with sunglasses is U+1F60E. Sunglasses is U+1F576 followed by U+FE0F. The object carries the older label, Emoji 0.7, and the face Emoji 1.0. No other emoji has sunglasses or shades in its name or CLDR search words.

How do I type (βŒβ– _β– ) without copying it?

It is six characters: left parenthesis, Reversed not sign, Black square, underscore, Black square, right parenthesis. With a number pad, and Alt codes that follow code page 437, hold Alt and type 169 for ⌐ and 254 for β– . Anywhere else the tile is quicker.

What decides which emoji count as cool here?

CLDR does. The face has 16 search words, and seven are moods: awesome, chilling, cool, rad, relaxed, slay and swag. The second group is every other emoji that shares one, ten in all, so Trophy gets in on slay and OK hand on rad.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed by hand. The 35 emoji, their names, code points, skin tones, subgroups and Emoji version numbers come from emoji-test.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt); names are the CLDR short names printed in that file, in sentence case. The search words are from the CLDR English annotations (https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotations/en.xml, main branch). Group one is every emoji to which CLDR gives the word sunglasses, shades, eyewear, glasses, goggles or monocle, less Clinking glasses: 7 emoji. Group two is every other emoji that shares one of seven mood words with Smiling face with sunglasses (awesome, chilling, cool, rad, relaxed, slay, swag), matched without regard to case: 10 emoji. The sun, beach, hand and prop emoji are this site's own choice, each tied to the subject by a CLDR word quoted in its note.
