How it works

Cool symbols copy and paste starts with 🆒, the only character Unicode names cool: squared cool, U+1F192. The other 526 tiles are the general set, in 16 groups from ☯ ☮ ☭ to arrows, chess pieces, currency and frames round a name.

One block supplies 131 of the tiles

Of the 460 single-character tiles, 131 come from the Miscellaneous Symbols block, 45 from Geometric Shapes and 44 from Dingbats, with 36 blocks used in all. Cool signs answers communist symbol copy paste with ☭, which Unicode names hammer and sickle. 69 tiles, ☯ and the zodiac among them, are copied with U+FE0E, which keeps a character as plain text.

Twelve alphabets, and codes you can type

For fonts copy paste symbols, Cool in 12 alphabets spells cool in bold script, Fraktur, double-struck and nine more, seven of them from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. They are characters, not fonts, so they paste as text. In the list under the grid, 67 tiles carry an Alt code and 141 an HTML name: ∞ is Alt+236 and ∞.

Tips
  • Search the grid by name or use: tick, bullet, crown, dice, euro and infinity each find their tiles.
  • 22 frames copy the word name: paste one, then type your own name over it.
  • A bracket pair copies as two characters: paste it, then type between them.

Questions and answers

Is there a cool emoji?

Yes: 🆒, the COOL button, from Emoji 0.6. CLDR, Unicode's search-word list, files the word cool under three more: 😎 smiling face with sunglasses, 😛 face with tongue and 🪭 folding hand fan. The four are the first tiles here.

Is there a symbols font generator?

No. A font generator swaps each letter for a styled letter, mostly from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which Unicode made for letters and digits. ☯ has one form and no styled copy. For your own words, the serif text generator has three alphabets.

How do I type a symbol with an Alt code?

Hold Alt and type the number on the number pad: Alt+3 gives ♥, Alt+26 gives → and Alt+236 gives ∞. Only 67 of these tiles have one, because Alt codes reach code pages 437 and 1252 and nothing beyond them. The rest are copied.

Why does a symbol turn into an emoji when I paste it?

Some characters, ☯ ♠ ✔ and the zodiac signs among them, have a text form and an emoji form, and an app may pick the colour one. 69 tiles here are copied with U+FE0E, the variation selector that asks for the text form.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed by hand. Every character was checked against UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt): the code points and the character names in the notes come from that file, names in sentence case. Block names come from Blocks.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/Blocks.txt) and the Unicode version each character arrived in from DerivedAge.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/DerivedAge.txt), both version 18.0.0. Other names and uses of a character come from the annotations in NamesList.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt). Only the other names of a character are taken from it, and one quoted comment where the script lists the character; aliases that are notation for another field are left out. It has no other name and no comment for the hammer and sickle, the yin yang or the peace symbol, and the build stops if that changes. The two voiced katakana letters decompose to the plain letter and U+3099 in UnicodeData.txt. The emoji, their names, code points and Emoji version numbers come from emoji-test.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt); names are the CLDR short names printed in that file, in sentence case. Emoji search words are from the CLDR English annotations (https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotations/en.xml and https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotationsDerived/en.xml, main branch). That list files the word cool under three emoji (face with tongue, smiling face with sunglasses, folding hand fan) and gives the COOL button the words button and COOL; U+1F192, squared cool, is the only character in UnicodeData.txt with the word cool in its name. It files one emoji under chess, the chess pawn, and no emoji name or search word in it mentions communist, communism, sickle or soviet. The infinity emoji is U+267E, permanent paper sign, from Emoji 11.0. The build stops if any of that changes. Which characters have an emoji form, and the text-style sequences that keep them plain, come from emoji-data.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-data.txt) and emoji-variation-sequences.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-variation-sequences.txt), version 18.0.0. Alt codes are from Unicode's own mapping tables: positions 128 to 255 of code page 437 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/MAPPINGS/VENDORS/MICSFT/PC/CP437.TXT), positions 1 to 31 of the PC video graphics table (https://www.unicode.org/Public/MAPPINGS/VENDORS/MISC/IBMGRAPH.TXT), and the four-digit codes from code page 1252 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/MAPPINGS/VENDORS/MICSFT/WINDOWS/CP1252.TXT). The build checks every one against this site's alt-codes-list dataset. HTML names are from the WHATWG list of named character references (https://html.spec.whatwg.org/entities.json); where a character has several, the HTML 4 name is printed (https://www.w3.org/TR/html4/sgml/entities.html), else the shortest. That U+2303 stands for the Control key in one desktop system's menus is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_key. The six text faces and their meanings (cool, shrug or shruggie, look of disapproval, bear, flower girl, table flip) are from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons. The 22 frames and the 12 spellings of the word cool are this site's own assembly from checked characters, and the tile names that differ from the Unicode name are our own. Every string was laid out with CoreText on macOS on 2026-09-19 and every one drew; the build stops if one falls to the LastResort font. All sources were checked on 2026-09-19. Licence: own work
