A sleepy kaomoji with the word attached

Nine faces carry a Japanese word. Wiktionary gives nemui as sleepy or drowsy, oyasumi as good night, short for oyasuminasai, suyasuya as sleeping soundly, and gūgū as snoring. Nemui is here three ways: hiragana, kanji and narrow katakana.

Tips
  • The last z in ᶻ 𝗓 𐰁 is not a z. It is Old Turkic letter Yenisei a, U+10C01, and needs a matching font.
  • Short keeps the 9 faces of 6 code points or fewer. (x_x) is five, all of them on a keyboard.
  • _(:3 」∠)_ lies down on a right corner bracket for an arm and an angle sign for legs.

Questions and answers

How do you type a sleeping kaomoji on a keyboard?

Brackets, two hyphens round an underscore, then three z: (-_-)zzz. Search keyboard for all nine typed that way. (=_=) zzz is one, and Wikipedia's article on kaomoji notes that the equals sign can be used for closed, anime-looking eyes.

What does (x_x) mean?

Wikipedia's article on kaomoji gives (x_x) as a look of stress. Here it is filed under Out cold with five others: (×_×) swaps the letters for multiplication signs, and _(×_×」∠)_ is lying down as well.

Why does a face show an empty box?

A character in it has no font on your device. Four faces borrow from beyond the usual blocks, and the label under each says where: _:(´ཀ`」 ∠):_ has Tibetan letter ka for a mouth. The Everyday characters chip hides all four.

Some are forms in common use that nobody owns. Wikipedia's article Kaomoji (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaomoji, read 2026-09-19) records (x_x) for a look of stress, and the equals sign for closed eyes, with =0= and =w= among its examples; the brackets round ours are our own. The labels, groups and order are our own.
