Copy the snore, or search for it
Press Copy under the big ZZZ, or tap a tile. For sleep emoji copy and paste, the second tile is Sleeping face. Search reads names and CLDR's words, so hotel finds Person in bed and dreams finds two moons. Pick a skin tone under More options and the sleeper follows it, as do three combos.
Which snores arrive intact
ZZZ carries Emoji 0.6, the oldest label on this page. Yawning face is Emoji 12.0 and the Wood in Sleeping like a log is 13.0, so an older device shows an empty box. (-_-)zzz and (:3[___] are plain ASCII. Borrowed staircase (αΆ» π π°) is the fragile one. Staircase zzz (αΆ» z Z) keeps the shape with three real z's.
Tips
CLDR gives zzz to four emoji: ZZZ, Sleeping face, Person in bed and Yawning face, who is still awake. Sleepy face misses out.
CLDR files only two emoji under dreams, Last quarter moon face and Waxing crescent moon. Crescent moon gets crescent, moon, ramadan and space.
Person in bed doubles as a hotel sign: its character name is Sleeping accommodation, and Unicode's names list glosses it as hotel, guestrooms.
Questions and answers
Is there a zzz emoji?
Yes. It is U+1F4A4, one character, and ZZZ is its CLDR short name. Unicode's names list puts it under Comic style symbols, between Bomb and Collision symbol. In the emoji ordering it closes the emotion subgroup, straight after Thought balloon. It takes no skin tone.
How do I type the small raised zzz?
Copy Superscript zzz: αΆ»αΆ»αΆ». It is U+1DBB three times, Modifier letter small z, in Unicode since version 4.1. There is no superscript capital Z. A subscript z, U+209F, arrived only with Unicode 18.0, so older fonts cannot draw it and this page leaves it off.
Why is the top step of my staircase an empty box?
The top step is no z but U+10C01, Old Turkic letter Yenisei a, from a script written right to left; a device with no Old Turkic font shows an empty box. The other two are U+1DBB, a superscript z, and U+1D5D3, a mathematical sans-serif z.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed by hand. The 25 emoji, their names, code points, skin tones and Emoji version numbers come from emoji-test.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt); names are the CLDR short names printed in that file, in sentence case. The search words quoted in the notes are from the CLDR English annotations (https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotations/en.xml, main branch). The first group is every emoji to which that file gives zzz, sleep or sleeping: 6. The second is every other emoji to which it gives night, dream or dreams: 9. The character names Sleeping symbol (U+1F4A4) and Sleeping accommodation (U+1F6CC), the right-to-left class of U+10C01 and the name of every character in the 20 text items come from UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt). The note that U+2124 is the set of integers is from NamesList.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt), and the Unicode versions of U+1DBB, U+10C01 and U+209F are from DerivedAge.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/DerivedAge.txt). Wikipedia's List of emoticons records (-_-)zzz and (︢q︢β½) as sleeping (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons), and Wiktionary gives suyasuya as a Japanese adverb for sleeping soundly (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E3%81%99%E3%82%84%E3%81%99%E3%82%84).
