How it works

Thirty-five pieces of horse ASCII art, all drawn for this page: horses standing, grazing, galloping and rearing, three unicorns, a winged horse, a rocking horse, a chess knight and three horseshoes. They run from one line to 14. Tap one to copy the whole animal.

Find the right horse

The sections go by height: 4 one-liners, 7 small, 17 medium, 7 large. Fits a comment box marks the 25 within 8 lines and 30 columns, this site's guess and no app's word. Search reads more than names: toy finds the rocking horse, the hobby horse and the wooden horse on wheels, and trojan finds only the last.

Give the horse a name

Four pieces hold words to type over. The stable door's plate takes 12 characters in place of DOBBIN, the rosette 3, the racehorse's number cloth 3, and the one-line name plate anything. On the door, what you add to the name comes out of the spaces beside the plate, or the right-hand wall moves. Search editable for all four.

Tips
  • The horse for a username is Horse head, one line: ~~/|/|"o___) is 12 characters, ears included.
  • A / on a line above the front ear makes any horse a unicorn: Small unicorn is Small horse, four lines with that and a spark.
  • In Horse race, one line, every ~/"> is a horse and every underscore is track. Add either.

Questions and answers

Why did my horse's head come off?

Runs of spaces were folded into one, and a head at the far right slid left without its neck. Squash-proof keeps the 7 with none. Markdown, tested as CommonMark, spares 2 of the 35: put three backticks above and below. The cat page covers both.

Which way up does a lucky horseshoe go?

Opinion is divided. Parts of Britain and Ireland hang it open end up, to catch the luck; much of Europe, the Middle East and Latin America hang it down, to pour luck on whoever walks beneath. Ours point up: the keyboard has no upside-down U.

Is there a horse I can paste as one character?

Several, and no piece here uses one: 🐴 Horse face (U+1F434), 🐎 Horse (U+1F40E), 🦄 Unicorn face (U+1F984) and 🎠 Carousel horse (U+1F3A0), each drawn the device's own way; see the horse emoji page. The chess knights ♞ and ♘ are horses too, and Unicode does not list them as emoji.
