Shocked and surprised are two lists

CLDR files 11 emoji under shock or shocked and 13 under surprise or surprised. Six are on both, the scream and Face with open mouth among them. Astonished face is shocked but never surprised, and Hushed face is the reverse. For surprised emoji copy and paste, start in the second group. It ends on Wrapped gift, the one surprise with no face.

Which ones travel

The scream and Astonished face carry the oldest label in Unicode's list, Emoji 0.6. Distorted face dates from Emoji 17.0 and Shaking face from 15.0, and a device without those fonts shows an empty box. :O, D: and O_O are plain ASCII. ฮฃ(๏พŸะ”๏พŸ) leans on three scripts at once.

Tips
  • For shock at somebody else's doing, take Person facepalming: CLDR lists shock, disbelief and smh. It follows the skin tone you pick under More options.
  • Double exclamation mark and Exclamation question mark each have a text form. The text style switch, also under More options, asks for the plain drawing.
  • CLDR lists interrobang for Exclamation question mark. The real interrobang is a separate character, U+203D, with no emoji form. It is in the text group.

Questions and answers

Which one is the shocked emoji?

CLDR files five emoji under shocked, and three are the usual candidates. Face screaming in fear, U+1F631, is the loud one. Astonished face, U+1F632, is the next code point along and leaves out the fear. Face with open mouth, U+1F62E, is only the O.

Is there a gasp emoji?

Yes, by CLDR's word: Face with open eyes and hand over mouth, from Emoji 14.0, filed under gasp, shock, omg and awe. The only other emoji with gasp is Face exhaling, which is a sigh and is not on this page.

Will ฮฃ(๏พŸะ”๏พŸ) show up properly when I paste it?

It pastes anywhere text does, but each character needs a font. The sigma is Greek, the mouth is the Cyrillic letter De, and the two eye marks are halfwidth katakana sound marks. A device missing one shows an empty box in that spot.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed by hand. The 33 emoji, their names, code points, skin tones and Emoji version numbers come from emoji-test.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt); names are the CLDR short names printed in that file, in sentence case. The search words quoted in the notes are from the CLDR English annotations (https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotations/en.xml, main branch). Two rules are complete: the group Filed under shocked is all 11 emoji to which that file gives the search word shock or shocked, and the group Filed under surprised is the rest of the 13 given surprise or surprised; 6 emoji are on both lists and appear once, under shocked. The groups Wow, omg and whoa and Bangs and alarms are this site's own pick. The text forms of the exclamation marks and High voltage come from emoji-variation-sequences.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-variation-sequences.txt). The 13 text faces and the 12 combos are this site's own choice, and the combo names are our own. Every character in a text face was checked against UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt), and a note that names a character uses its name from that file. Wikipedia's List of emoticons (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons) records :O, :-O, =O and 8-0 as surprise or shock, O_O as surprise or shock, D: as horror or great dismay, the degree-sign face as surprised, the diamond-mouth face as shocked or surprised, the two sigma faces as huge surprise and shocked, the Cyrillic-mouth face as amazed and (l'o'l) as shocked.
