How it works

θ is the theta symbol: Greek small letter theta, U+03B8. The 60 rows add the capital Θ, the script form ϑ, the full-bar ϴ, maths styles such as 𝜃, and angle strings such as cosθ, Δθ and s=rθ, which paste in one piece.

θ, ϑ and ϴ are three code points

Unicode keeps the shapes apart. θ, U+03B8, is the closed letter. ϑ, U+03D1, is script theta, drawn with an open loop, and it is what \vartheta and ϑ give. ϴ, U+03F4, is a capital whose bar touches the ring on both sides, added in 2001. Greek words take θ and Θ only.

Tips
  • Alt+233 types the capital Θ. The small θ has no Alt code and no Option key, so copying it is the short way.
  • ɵ, Ө and ⊖ are not theta: a phonetic vowel, a Cyrillic letter and a maths operator. Eleven look-alikes are listed, each under its name.
  • Θ(n), big theta, marks a tight bound on a running time. A capital Θ is also the dimension symbol of temperature.

Questions and answers

How do I type the theta symbol on a keyboard?

The small θ has no Alt code. On Windows, Alt with 233 on the number pad gives the capital Θ. In Word, type 03B8, then Alt and X. On a Mac, press Fn or Globe with E and search theta. On a phone, copy it.

What is the HTML code for theta?

θ is the small letter and Θ the capital. As numbers, θ is θ or θ. Script ϑ has three names: ϑ, ϑ and ϑ. The full-bar ϴ has no named entity, so write ϴ.

How do I write theta in LaTeX?

\theta prints θ and \Theta the capital, in maths mode with no package. \vartheta prints the script form. For angular velocity write \dot{\theta}, which sets one dot above. \ddot{\theta} sets two, and \hat{\theta} sets the hat of a statistical estimate.

What does theta mean in maths?

Lowercase θ usually names an unknown angle, and in statistics a parameter. Capital Θ marks a tight bound on an algorithm's running time, and in finance theta is an option's time decay. It is the eighth letter of the Greek alphabet.

How this list was compiled: Names, and the code points they belong to, are checked against UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt), and printed in sentence case; its decomposition field is what says a maths alphabet character is U+03B8, U+0398, U+03D1 or U+03F4 in a font, and that U+1DBF is a superscript U+03B8. Other names, cross-references and notes (script theta, symmetric difference, the formal name does not describe the glyph, the dot above as Newton's derivative mark, the headings of Latin Extended-G) are from NamesList.txt of the same version (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt); the version a character was added in is from DerivedAge.txt (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/DerivedAge.txt), block names are from Blocks.txt, and the years are from https://www.unicode.org/history/publicationdates.html. Alt codes are from the code page 437 table (https://www.unicode.org/Public/MAPPINGS/VENDORS/MICSFT/PC/CP437.TXT), where 233 is the capital theta and the small letter is absent, and from the code page 1252 table (https://www.unicode.org/Public/MAPPINGS/VENDORS/MICSFT/WINDOWS/CP1252.TXT), which has neither. A U.S. keyboard layout has no Option key for any theta. HTML entity names are from https://html.spec.whatwg.org/entities.json, the HTML 4 name first where there is one, else the shortest. LaTeX macros are listed only when LaTeX's own fontdef.dtx (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/latex3/latex2e/develop/base/fontdef.dtx) or the amssymb and amsfonts sources (https://mirrors.ctan.org/fonts/amsfonts/source/) define them, matched to a code point through unicode-math-table.tex (https://github.com/latex3/unicode-math). The Compose sequence of the zilde is from https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libx11/-/raw/master/nls/en_US.UTF-8/Compose.pre. What the letter is for, as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theta records it: the eighth letter, the unknown angle, the statistical parameter, the theta functions, the italic capital as the dimension of temperature, big theta as a tight bound, the open form of U+03D1 and the full bar of U+03F4, fita and the reform of 1918, the barred o as a vowel sign, and the archaic cross within a circle. The dimension symbol of temperature: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_System_of_Quantities, checked 2026-09-20. The last group holds characters that one ordinary computer had no font for on the day this list was checked; your device may differ. What is listed: every character Unicode names theta, the letters of other alphabets that the article or Unicode ties to it, characters often mistaken for it, and this site's own angle and formula strings, which are two to four characters in a row with nothing between them. Left out: the other Greek letters (each has its own page), the empty set and the diameter sign, which have a slanted stroke and pages of their own.
