Search by hmm, idk or idea
Search reads Unicode names and CLDR search words. Hmm finds Thinking face and Face with raised eyebrow, the only two emoji with the word. Idk finds the three shrugs, idea finds Thought balloon and Light bulb, and clue finds Puzzle piece and Fingerprint. Pick a skin tone under More options and eight tiles and four combos follow it.
What the thought bubble is made of
The kaomoji ๏ผยด-`๏ผ.๏ฝกoO( ... ) trails four characters: a full stop, a halfwidth ideographic full stop, a small o and a capital O. Type your own thought where the dots are. Its brackets are fullwidth, so it needs a Japanese font. :-/ and the other sideways faces are plain ASCII. Fingerprint, Emoji 16.0, is the newest tile, so older fonts miss it first.
Tips
Face with monocle has no thinking word in CLDR at all: its list is classy, fancy, rich, stuffy and wealthy.
CLDR spells the sound two ways: hmm, two m's, for Thinking face, and hm for Confused face.
Questions and answers
Is there more than one thinking emoji?
One by name. Thinking face dates from Emoji 1.0, which Unicode's chart puts in 2015, and chin, one of its eight CLDR search words, is listed for no other emoji. Three more carry a thinking word: Face with raised eyebrow, Confused face and Thought balloon.
Why does the thinking face ignore the skin tone I picked?
It has a hand, but Unicode files it as a smiley, in the subgroup face-hand with six others, Shushing face and Saluting face among them. No entry in the Smileys and emotion group has skin tone forms.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-19, not typed by hand. The 33 emoji, their names, code points, sequences, skin tones, subgroups and Emoji version numbers come from emoji-test.txt, version 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt); names are the CLDR short names printed in that file, in sentence case. The search words are from the CLDR English annotations (https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotations/en.xml and https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/blob/main/common/annotationsDerived/en.xml, main branch). Group one is every emoji with a thinking word in any form (think, thought, hm, hmm, ponder, wonder, consider): 4 emoji. Group two is every other emoji listed under doubt, doubtful, unsure, skeptical, dunno, idk, maybe, guess, confused or huh: 7. Group three is every emoji listed under question: 6. The brains, ideas and clues are this site's own choice, each tied to the subject by a CLDR word quoted in its note. The formal character names are from UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt), which also checked every character in the text faces. 7 text faces are recorded at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons: :-/, :/ and :S (skeptical, annoyed, undecided, uneasy, hesitant, paired there with Thinking face), (?_?) and (ใปใป? (confusion), and from its table of emoticons from a Japanese message board ๏ผยด-`๏ผ.๏ฝกoO( ... ) (thinking) and m9(ใปโใป) (flash of intuition). The other 7 text faces and the 13 combos are our own arrangements under our own names.
