What a symbol is called

The list under the tool names every character, its code point and the words that write it. ♪ is Eighth note, typed as eighth note or quaver. ☽ is First quarter moon, typed as moon. Everyday words are left alone: and, at, number, cross and pound need their longer names, such as ampersand, at sign and latin cross.

Tips
  • A capital first letter gives the Greek capital: Pi is Π, pi is π, Delta is Δ.
  • A hyphen protects a word: sun-kissed stays as typed, and only a loose sun turns into ☀.
  • A box instead of a symbol means the device's font lacks it. ♥ dates from Unicode 1.1, ₿ from 10.0.

Questions and answers

How do I turn words into symbols?

Type the word that names the character: heart, star, snowflake, check mark, euro, aries. The result changes as you type, and Copy takes all of it. Words the table lacks stay as typed.

Why does love or phone not turn into a symbol?

No character is named love or phone. Every word here comes from a character's Unicode name or its aliases in the Unicode names list: ♥ is Black heart suit, alias valentine, and ☎ is Black telephone. Type heart, telephone, and envelope for ✉.

Can it turn symbols back into words?

Partly. Swap reads Greek letters, fractions and circled numbers back, because they count as letters and numbers: ½ π comes back as one half pi. A heart or an arrow stays as it is. The list under the tool gives its name.

Why do some symbols show up as emoji?

91 of these characters also have an emoji form. Each is sent with U+FE0E after it, an invisible character that asks for the plain text drawing. An app may ignore it and show the emoji.

Is this a words to emoji translator?

No. It writes text symbols only, ♥ and ☀ in the colour of the words around them, never the red heart or the yellow sun. Words with no character of that name stay as words.

How this list was compiled: Built by script on 2026-09-20, not typed by hand. 362 characters: 361 that a word or phrase writes, 611 words and phrases in all, and the invisible selector U+FE0E, listed so that it is explained. Every name, and the code point it belongs to, is read out of UnicodeData.txt, version 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/UnicodeData.txt, the same file as https://www.unicode.org/Public/UCD/latest/ucd/UnicodeData.txt on that day), and printed in sentence case. How the words were chosen: a word goes in only if the character's own Unicode name carries it (heart for Black heart suit, never love), as it stands, as a plural, as a direction without its ending (right for rightwards), or as two neighbouring name words written as one (trademark). 29 rows also take a word from the character's alias lines in NamesList.txt of the same version (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/NamesList.txt), such as hash for the number sign and Scorpio for Scorpius; each of those rows quotes the line. The script stops on any word it cannot trace to one of the two files, and on any word claimed by two rows. Edited by hand after a review on 2026-09-20, to spare ordinary sentences: 18 bare entries were taken out where the row keeps a longer one (at, and, number, half, quarter, pound, pounds, note, notes, male, female, male and female, club, clubs, section, cross, peace, warning) and each of those rows says so; Cancer now answers to cancer sign and not to the bare word, which in most sentences is the illness, and that one entry is ours and in neither file. The alias lines of the rows touched were read again in NamesList.txt 18.0.0 that day. Where several names carry the same word, the bare word goes to the solid everyday character (heart to U+2665, star to U+2605, king to U+265A) and the rest need a longer name. 91 of the characters also have an emoji form; those are written with U+FE0E after them, the text style sequence listed in emoji-variation-sequences.txt 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-variation-sequences.txt), and 22 of them would draw as an emoji without it by the Emoji_Presentation property in emoji-data.txt 18.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/emoji/emoji-data.txt). The number sign and the asterisk are left bare. The version each character arrived in is from DerivedAge.txt 18.0.0 (https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/ucd/DerivedAge.txt): 298 of the 362 date from Unicode 1.1, and the newest is Bitcoin sign, U+20BF, from version 10.0.
