How it works
J in bubble letters is a stem with a hook, and the hook is what fattening spoils: it curls shut into a loop or shrinks to a toe. These six fonts show each outcome, the most open hook first.

Six hooks, open to shut
Mochiy Pop One opens the set with the most open hook, clear air between tip and stem. Fredoka ends its hook in a ball. Lilita One adds a bar at the top left, so its J reads even with a short hook. Bubblegum Sans flies a small flag there. Chewy curls the hook shut into a teardrop. In Chango the hook is a toe and the J a boot.
Small j hangs below the line
In five of the six, small j drops its hook under the line, so leave room below. Mochiy Pop One differs: its j stands on the line, as tall as the capital, under a square dot. Type a J word in Your letters or words, then press Next style for Fredoka.
Tips
- A fat J with no bar can pass for a boot. Add a short bar left of the top.
- Swing the pencil hook wide, a full stem-width clear of the stem. Fattening eats that gap from both sides.
Questions and answers
How do you draw a bubble letter J?
Pencil a straight stem, swing a hook out to the left at its foot and bring the tip up a little. Draw one rounded outline around the whole line, keeping clear paper between tip and stem, then rub out the pencil.
How do you draw a lowercase j in bubble letters?
Pencil a short stem that runs on under the line and hooks left, with a dot above it. Outline stem and hook as one shape and the dot as its own circle. Set the dot high, or the two outlines touch.
Which way does the hook on a J go?
To the left, towards the letter before it, in capital and small j alike. A J hooked to the right is backwards and reads as an L with a curled foot. Check the printed sheet before you go over the pencil in pen.
